POV

Lights, Cues, and a Very Long Panto Run

I spent two pantomime seasons on the live production team at Gordon Craig Theatre, part of one of the UK's longest-running panto seasons consisting of 97 shows (not including tech week) and it taught me more about live performance than almost anything else I've worked on.

I was there for all of it. During build and tech period, I helped with install, pitched in on scenic fabrication, and got the show ready for the run. By tech week, I was leading the followspot side alongside another operator, and together we built our own cue sheets from scratch so the show could hold together night after night, all season.

Then came the run itself. performance after performance, chasing performers in real time, hitting every cue, staying locked in with stage management, and riding the chaos of a packed pantomime crowd. It's a role that demands total focus and real stamina, but more than that, it taught me how lighting, staging, performance and audience energy all move together as one thing in a live room. You feel it more than you think it.
